Should I Customize My Wine Labels?

I remember growing up as an Italian American my father and uncles would exchange their homemade wine in empty bottles of Hennessey, Courvoisier or any other empty glass bottle that they could get their hands on. They never used plastic and some of them went a step further and washed the original label off the bottle. Then out of nowhere one of them had a bottle with a customized label. It was very simple, it had the family's last name in red letters over a white background and I think a picture of some grapes.

My father had one bottle that had a customized wine label on it. It kind of happened by accident, the way the story goes is he gave a bottle of wine to someone who had a friend who painted and they thought it was really cool that dad made homemade wine. Well sometime went by and when dad ran back into this person, he gave him the bottle back with the now painted label on it. The label was simple and nice. It has our last name in a half circle and a bunch of grapes below it.

Dad thinks it's a great conversation piece, I think it shows a humble pride. Making wine has been a family tradition since before they came to America. It was something my grandfather did and great grandfather did and so on. Imagine all those generations of wine makers.

Why am I saying all this? What does it have to do with customized wine labels? Because in my opinion personalized wine labels isn't just about the description of what's inside it shows a sense of pride. Making wine is as old as civilization itself and it continues to be as popular as ever. There's nothing like a nice glass of wine with family and friends. Having a good glass wine with your dinner is like money in the bank.

Today with readymade everything taking pride in your food or beverage is unheard of. But there was a time that you drank and ate what you made. So if it was good you drank and ate well and if it was bad then it was going to be a long year.

Of course there is more to customized wine labels then just showing off a little pride, you can also turn a simple bottle of wine into a really cool gift. Most everyone enjoys a glass of wine with friends and family; now add a nice label stating a special occasion and it will give them something else to talk about when they drink it.

So the reasons really go on and on. Like I said I still remember the old days when as long as the bottle was glass, clean and full of good wine that was about all you needed to know. But today with the advent of printers, printing and so on you can in the words of Emeril Lagasse "kick it up a notch". So go ahead show a little pride in your work and if you bought the wine and are thinking of adding a customized wine label that's ok too, because showing a little creativity can go a long way.
